Remember the future - Ingrid Larssen / Solveig Ovanger / Inger Blix Kvammen 13.05.-12.08.2023

Laugardaginn 13.maí kl. 14 opnaði myndlistarsýningin Remember the future í Sláturhúsinu Menningarmiðstöð með verkum eftir norsku listakonurnar Ingrid Larssen, Solveig Ovanger og Inger Blix Kvammen.

Remember the Future, tímalaus og tímabær

Í innsetningunni Lost - objects from the sea eru sum verkanna lituð með blárri lúpínu frá Egilsstöðum og naflafléttu frá Sílalækur.

Remember the Future

timeless and timely

We live in unstable times and in a world characterized by conflicts. International politics affects our lives to a greater extent now than it did in the second half of the 20th century, in the post-World War II era. Global capitalism controls more and more of our everyday life. Social media demands attention and wants to set the agenda. Consumer society offers quick solutions that are not compatible with the sustainable use of our available resources.

In many parts of the world people live under demanding conditions, both materially, socially and health-wise. Even those of us who live in the north of Europe do not escape small and large upheavals.

It can sometimes be difficult to keep track of where we are and where we are going.

At the same time, there are political, economic, academic and cultural forces working to make the world a better place for us all. It gives hope to listen to wise voices. Sometimes the voices come from far away, sometimes they are very close.

Art can represent such a voice.

In the intersection between past, present and future. In meetings between people, history and culture. With inspiration from foremothers, indigenous peoples and the nature that surrounds us. Expressed with different materials and techniques. This is where we find the exhibition Remember The Future. Three artists from Nordland, Troms and Finnmark - Norway and Sápmi - have found artistic and human common denominators in each other. They are all concerned with themes such as life and survival, everyday life and sustainability, the traditions and craft practices of our foremothers, nomadic cultures and available natural resources. All three artists have solid knowledge with roots in both Norwegian and Sami or Kven culture. The Sami are the indigenous people of the Northern Cape, and the Kven are a national minority in Norway originated from Finland.

The artists retrieve information and experience from the past that can be useful and important for the future.

Inger blix Kvammen uses the archiving of memories as a conceptual tool when she tells her stories through objects and photography - Memory Archives. Her work often deals with themes related to migrations and cultural exchange across borders and cultures. In the sub-project Tundra Archives, the nomadic reindeer herders, the Nenets, who live in north-west Russia, are highlighted. In the Varanger Archives, she brings out stories from her own multicultural neighborhood, a border area in the north-east of Finnmark, by the Arctic Ocean, characterized by encounters between the Sami, Norwegian, Finnish and Kven. The artist has developed his own methods for using textile techniques such as crochet, embroidery and weaving, in metal. She likes to combine decorative forms such as necklaces with photographs and symbolic elements, from both culture and nature. The objects become memory wreaths or story bearers that are about the people she has met, the way of life and everyday knowledge. It makes you want to ask yourself:Who am I? Why am I who I am? Where am I from? And where do I go?

Ingrid Larssen was trained as a jewelery artist in the 1980s, at a time when jewelery was called wearable art. They were big and experimental. Later, textile became her most preferred material. She has researched and further developed the waffle stitch embroidery technique, which she sews by hand on silk and wool. This is an over 800-year-old technique that was first used to make workers' linen shirts both close-fitting and flexible. Beyond the 20th century, the technique was picked up by the fashion industry. It is rarely seen in artistic expression. Larssen uses the technique when she shapes light sculptural objects in silk organza. Fabrics and yarns that she uses are dyed from plants and lichen, seaweed and sea urchins - mostly harvested in her immediate environment. In the installation Lost - objects from the sea, some of the works are colored with blue lupine from Egilsstaðir and navel lichen from Sílalækur. She is inspired by the magic and myths of the sea, and by the vulnerable and perishable nature. In the installation The last years, she has reflected on a person's last year of life, where illness and dementia lead into a shadow world where events from childhood become clearer and the present disappears.

Solveig Ovanger explores methods for preserving and tanning fish skins - old preparation techniques handed down by naturalists in Siberia and tanning techniques learned from a retired tanner back home in Norway. Ovanger combines the techniques in different ways in the processing of raw skins from local fish species such as cod, pollock and salmon. The use of fish skins is about belonging and a life by the coast, about the richness of the sea and possibilities for utilizing a raw material that these days is usually regarded as waste. The artist is inspired by the wordless dynamics in nature, in the universe and between people, as well as by the awareness that everything is connected in a moving whole. The objects have several layers of meaning and can be interpreted widely. The hemispheres are based on the geometric shapes circle and sphere, basic shapes that can be found everywhere in the entire spectrum of dimensions from microscopic sizes to celestial bodies and galaxies. Large kaleidoscopes show fragments of nature that are repeated between mirrors in endless images, not unlike man-made ornamentation. In the wall installation 2022/2023, the geometric structure is absent. Perhaps a reminder that nothing lasts forever, nothing should be taken for granted?

Remember The Future consists of three-dimensional material-based objects and photographs. The aesthetics are delicate and accessible. The craftsmanship and execution is time-consuming and detailed. The techniques are old and new, and the materials are taken directly from nature or are processed organic substances and minerals. The exhibition gives us the opportunity to reflect on the concepts of past and future.

The artists highlight current topics seen in the light of history. At the same time, the focus is on the foremothers' knowledge, and that craftsmanship must not be forgotten and replaced by mass production. In the exhibition we find references that bring us into the universe of thought and out into the social sphere. The modern world does not always appear to be the ideal place for man. We who live in the 21st century have many advantages that previous generations would probably have liked to take part in. At the same time, we who live today could benefit greatly from practicing more of our foremothers' knowledge, both when it comes to taking care of each other and on nature.

The Remember the Future project is close to the earth and close to the harbour, close to people and close to life. The three artists look back on their mothers and grandmothers as transmitters of knowledge, as carriers of tradition and as sources of inspiration. And the term great-grandmother does not only mean direct kinship and blood ties. It's about women and mothers way back. The exhibition revolves around the really big questions, but also goes right to the core of what life is about. At the same time, it is concrete and direct in that it points to the importance of taking a few steps to the side, stopping and looking back to discover what we have forgotten or not cared about.

Three artists. Several different techniques and materials. In Remember The Future, art meets in a multifaceted theme and interest in passing on traditions, old knowledge and inherited skills - all because the artists want this to be remembered in the future.
